Arabella Miller

10

Producing organic cotton clothes opened our eyes to the reasons why it’s important to choose organic cotton clothing for children. So we applied for Arabella Miller organic children’s clothes to be certified organic by the Soil Association, to give parents like us that extra bit of reassurance of quality and safety. Soil Association certification means that that our organic cotton clothes can be traced right back to the field where the cotton was picked. We’ve ensured that the ink in our unique designs is also certified organic by the Soil Association. This makes Arabella Miller children's clothes a first in the UK and we hope others will also consider using certified organic ink in children’s clothing. They’re produced in a factory audited by the Fairwear Foundation so that means a better deal for those that make Arabella Miller clothing and reassurance that no children have made your child’s clothes. We take our ethical commitments as serious as our style. We have our own ethical and environmental policy and our ethical credentials have been independently approved by Ethical Junction.

Arkadash

Arkadash is the Turkish word for friend. It's a clue to how we want to do business, respecting the rights and needs of workers and farmers, using natural resources as carefully as we can, treating our suppliers and customers well, being friendly to the planet and the people around us. We sell sweatshop-free clothing, as much of it as possible made from fairtrade and organic cotton and hemp. We’re always on the lookout for new suppliers and hope to manufacture some of our own clothes, too, one day. We’d like to do that by working directly with a small cooperative or family business – in fact we’ve started already with our cotton bags, which are made and printed for us by our friends Esther, David and their mum Mary, in Kangulumira district, Uganda.

How deep is Consumer Demand for Fair Trade?

The most recent data show that the sale of Fair Trade Certified products continued growing strongly last year- an expansion that as been slowed but by no means halted by the current economic recession. This both heartens Fair Trade advocates and suggests future growth in the amounts and range of products that consumers are willing to pay more for in the name of social justice. While the limits to that expansion are hard to predict, several indices-sales data, an international survey of consumer opinions, and the recent large-scale involvement of major corporate retailers- suggest the phenomenon has considerably further to go before exhausting its potential for growth. Globally, the sale of Fair Trade products grew 22% in 2008 to $4.3 billion.
