Cafédirect

18

Cafédirect is the innovative result of Oxfam, Equal Exchange, Traidcraft, and Twin Trading’s decision to bypass the conventional market and buy coffee direct from disadvantaged growers in developing countries. Since 2000 alone we have invested more than £3.3 million of our profits directly into the businesses and communities of our growers, and paid more than £13 million over and above market prices for our raw materials. Pioneering grower initiatives and consumer engagements for more than 17 years, Cafédirect has developed and works to its own Gold Standard, consistently setting the bar for ethical business leadership. In a report issued by Millward Brown in 2007, UK consumers voted us the most recommended brand in the nation in a survey of 2,000 companies.

Caley's Fine Chocolate

59

Many of the original chocolate manufacturers in the UK were originally setup as family businesses, as was the case with Caley’s. Today the company is once again family-run. Having always maintained a strong sense of community, today’s global marketplace means that we are able to extend this to the producers and growers of our raw materials such as cocoa and sugar. A key part of this is by using Fairtrade ingredients. Caley’s have been making Fairtrade products since 2004 and are working very hard to make all of their products Fairtrade by June 2008.

Cocoa Loco

508

Here at Cocoa Loco our ethics are important to us. Cocoa Loco is not a big business, disguising itself as an artisan chocolate maker with green credentials. We are a small family firm that bake everything in our kitchen from scratch. We refuse to compromise on the quality of the ingredients and we create handmade organic products in a way that minimises the impact on the environment. The only added ingredient in our products is the love and care that our small team put into their baking & making. Fairtrade We are delighted to announce that moving forward we are able to offer a number of our products as both Fairtrade and Organic. At Cocoa Loco we believe quality lies in exceptional taste, care in how our products have been produced, from bean to mouth, and that the people in this chain have been treated fairly. We are therefore proud to be able to display a mark that clearly conveys a set of values which are not only important to us, but give you confidence that some of the 50 million people worldwide who are dependant on cocoa for their livelihood have received a fair price to produce their beans in a sustainable way and have received money from a fairtrade premium that their community can democratically invest in their development.

Divine Chocolate

100

Divine is not only totally delicious, it is also a pioneer in the movement for fairer trade with African smallholder farmers. As well as getting a fair price for its 'best of the best' cocoa, Kuapa Kokoo, a co-operative of over 45,000 farmers in Ghana, West Africa, is also the major shareholder in the company. This means the farmers have a say in how Divine is run, and share in the profits. To celebrate heavenly Divine's Ghanaian roots, and introduce more chocolate lovers to its pleasures, Divine recently dessed itself in beautiful new packaging. You can find Divine in all major supermarkets as well as Oxfam and independent stores all around the country. Visit the Divine website for the full story of Divine and Kuapa Kokoo and to find your nearest stockist. You can also read the story of Divine inside the wrapper, while treating yourself to something Divine.

Equal Exchange

94

The origins of Equal Exchange stretch back to 1979 when three voluntary workers returned to Edinburgh after working on aid projects in various parts of Africa. Along with a sister organisation in London, Campaign Co-op, they started buying instant coffee from Bukoba on Lake Victoria in Tanzania. As a result Campaign Coffee was born. The volunteers had seen how small scale farmers were getting into debt due, in part, to the appallingly low prices they received for their products. Aid was not the only answer - direct, fairer trading could help redress the balance! Many years later, after bigger campaigns, more education and better products finally reaching independent retailers and supermarkets, the three volunteers' dreams are beginning to be realised.

How deep is Consumer Demand for Fair Trade?

The most recent data show that the sale of Fair Trade Certified products continued growing strongly last year- an expansion that as been slowed but by no means halted by the current economic recession. This both heartens Fair Trade advocates and suggests future growth in the amounts and range of products that consumers are willing to pay more for in the name of social justice. While the limits to that expansion are hard to predict, several indices-sales data, an international survey of consumer opinions, and the recent large-scale involvement of major corporate retailers- suggest the phenomenon has considerably further to go before exhausting its potential for growth. Globally, the sale of Fair Trade products grew 22% in 2008 to $4.3 billion.
