Ben and Jerry's

In 2006, we launched the world’s first ever Fairtrade vanilla ice cream. Aside from its great taste, our vanilla ice cream offers a real difference to the lives of the farmers who produce its vanilla and sugar in India and Paraguay. The premium we pay for these ingredients enables the farmers to make positive steps towards providing basic needs for their families and communities such as healthcare, education and safe housing. We’re proud to be involved in a global movement that’s helping to grow a market for Fairtrade ingredients and products which is why we’ve embarked on a long term partnership with the Fairtrade Foundation. We now have 3 Fairtrade flavours - Vanilla, Vanilla Toffee Crunch and Chunky Monkey ... more to follow soon. ‘Fairtrade is about making sure people get their fair share of the pie. The whole concept of fair-trade goes to the heart of our values and the sense of right and wrong. Nobody wants to buy something that was made by exploiting somebody else.’ - Jerry Greenfield

How deep is Consumer Demand for Fair Trade?

The most recent data show that the sale of Fair Trade Certified products continued growing strongly last year- an expansion that as been slowed but by no means halted by the current economic recession. This both heartens Fair Trade advocates and suggests future growth in the amounts and range of products that consumers are willing to pay more for in the name of social justice. While the limits to that expansion are hard to predict, several indices-sales data, an international survey of consumer opinions, and the recent large-scale involvement of major corporate retailers- suggest the phenomenon has considerably further to go before exhausting its potential for growth. Globally, the sale of Fair Trade products grew 22% in 2008 to $4.3 billion.
