Asda

We’re so passionate about Fairtrade at ASDA, we have a dedicated team who work closely with the Fairtrade organisation to promote their licensed products. By continuing to expand the range of Fairtrade products in our stores, we are helping our customers make a contribution to the cause. All of our products which bear the Fairtrade mark are guaranteed to have been produced by workers in safe, decent working conditions. And because the Foundation’s working practices promote democratic processes within organisations and communities, it means farmers and workers are being empowered to take more control over their lives.

Buchanans of Scotland Confectionery

15

The sugar used to produce these confections for you is produced by the Kasinthula Cane Growers Association. Through the hard work and perseverance of these farmers, villages such as Kapasule have gained their own water supply of safe, clean water paid for by their Fairtrade premium. Before that, women and children had to carry water each day in containers from a well situated 1.5km from their village. Our company is pleased that we are increasing our purchases from the 3rd world countries, thereby guaranteeing that the money paid actually reaches the source from which the supply emanates. Greenock has a long and proud history of trade with every corner of the world. Our Buchanan’s brand started exactly 150 years ago so we were possibly buying sugar from the great, great grandfathers of our present supplier and we’re pleased to continue this tradition.

Burnt Sugar

17

In 2006 we decided to source fair trade sugar. We figured that with it being such an important ingredient in our sweet-making, we should know where it comes from and how it is produced. In 2007, Justine (Burnt Sugar's founder) made a trip to West Kenya to meet the farmers of a sugar farming co-operative (WEKO) who had recently received Fairtrade certification. "With 19,000 farmers belonging to the co-operative (each owning just a small piece of land), and no electricity, I was amazed at how all the farmers I met understood what being Fairtrade certified meant and how they would benefit." As well as receiving a guarantee fair price for their sugar, the farmers also directly receive a set premium per ton of sugar which is to be used for social projects like building a clinic or school for example.

Caley's Fine Chocolate

59

Many of the original chocolate manufacturers in the UK were originally setup as family businesses, as was the case with Caley’s. Today the company is once again family-run. Having always maintained a strong sense of community, today’s global marketplace means that we are able to extend this to the producers and growers of our raw materials such as cocoa and sugar. A key part of this is by using Fairtrade ingredients. Caley’s have been making Fairtrade products since 2004 and are working very hard to make all of their products Fairtrade by June 2008.

Chicza

656

The resulting product is a rare exception in the mostly artificial world of chewing gums. Chicza's natural taste aims to capture the essence of fresh and wild fruits, herbs and spices, and that original gummy and chewy consistence that only natural gum can give. One of the great advantages of Chicza's composition is biodegradability. Once disposed of, its all-natural components will become dust within weeks. (It can actually improve the texture of compost). Three flavours will be available early 2009: wild mint, heirloom lime and spearmint. Soon, new flavour lines will appear, bringing to you an intense and innovative range of tropical fruits, herbs and spices.

Chocaid.com

62

We're David and Stephanie Wilson, we have three little girls who are our pride and joy and after them we are just passionate about Chocaid.com. Like all brilliant ideas it is dead simple. Buy and enjoy top quality chocolate, and that wonderful charity Save the Children receives money direct from the sale to help children in Ethiopia. Call it perfect synergy or the chocolate equivalent of carbon neutral. Call it what you want. We just call it Chocaid.com. We came across Chocaid.com a few years ago when it was just a small internet company and we were immediately hooked on the idea of chocolate with a conscience (David is a vicar's son after all!) So when we got the opportunity to buy the company what else could we do? We took a deep breath, ignored our friends and family who said we were mad and sold our home in the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside to fund our dream.

How deep is Consumer Demand for Fair Trade?

The most recent data show that the sale of Fair Trade Certified products continued growing strongly last year- an expansion that as been slowed but by no means halted by the current economic recession. This both heartens Fair Trade advocates and suggests future growth in the amounts and range of products that consumers are willing to pay more for in the name of social justice. While the limits to that expansion are hard to predict, several indices-sales data, an international survey of consumer opinions, and the recent large-scale involvement of major corporate retailers- suggest the phenomenon has considerably further to go before exhausting its potential for growth. Globally, the sale of Fair Trade products grew 22% in 2008 to $4.3 billion.
