Adila

2

adila (just & fair) launched July 2006, the story began Nov 2005. We had a great idea, small budget and lots of enthusiasm. We set off in our 35yr old beetle around Cape Town and the West Coast of South Africa. Our aim? To seek out fair-trade, eco-friendly products that were funky, contemporary, handmade, unique and beautiful! We wanted traditional skills applied to modern design, waste and re-cycled materials transformed into useful and desirable objects. We visited and spoke with the people who actually, weave, knit, string beads, and design. Each story is unique, Bessie at the helm of her farm, Jeannette's passion for design and her community, Alison's innovative vision and enthusiasm are a few amongst many. You can enjoy adila products with confidence, knowing they have been made with care, by the hands of skilled craftspeople, fairly paid for their time and expertise.

It is our philosophy to ensure that all of our accessories that we source to sell are individual and handmade. Some of our products are Fairly Traded in India and South America and some products, quite rarely in todays society, are made right here in the UK. Our collection ranges from handbags and scarves to belts and jewellery, all the while maintaining unique, quality and handmade qualities. We ensure that all of our collections are handmade whether by the designers own hands, a small local workshop or fairly traded, as well as the materials used being kind to the environment.

Arkadash

Arkadash is the Turkish word for friend. It's a clue to how we want to do business, respecting the rights and needs of workers and farmers, using natural resources as carefully as we can, treating our suppliers and customers well, being friendly to the planet and the people around us. We sell sweatshop-free clothing, as much of it as possible made from fairtrade and organic cotton and hemp. We’re always on the lookout for new suppliers and hope to manufacture some of our own clothes, too, one day. We’d like to do that by working directly with a small cooperative or family business – in fact we’ve started already with our cotton bags, which are made and printed for us by our friends Esther, David and their mum Mary, in Kangulumira district, Uganda.

How deep is Consumer Demand for Fair Trade?

The most recent data show that the sale of Fair Trade Certified products continued growing strongly last year- an expansion that as been slowed but by no means halted by the current economic recession. This both heartens Fair Trade advocates and suggests future growth in the amounts and range of products that consumers are willing to pay more for in the name of social justice. While the limits to that expansion are hard to predict, several indices-sales data, an international survey of consumer opinions, and the recent large-scale involvement of major corporate retailers- suggest the phenomenon has considerably further to go before exhausting its potential for growth. Globally, the sale of Fair Trade products grew 22% in 2008 to $4.3 billion.
