Equal Exchange

94

The origins of Equal Exchange stretch back to 1979 when three voluntary workers returned to Edinburgh after working on aid projects in various parts of Africa. Along with a sister organisation in London, Campaign Co-op, they started buying instant coffee from Bukoba on Lake Victoria in Tanzania. As a result Campaign Coffee was born. The volunteers had seen how small scale farmers were getting into debt due, in part, to the appallingly low prices they received for their products. Aid was not the only answer - direct, fairer trading could help redress the balance! Many years later, after bigger campaigns, more education and better products finally reaching independent retailers and supermarkets, the three volunteers' dreams are beginning to be realised.

Nirvana Sugars

361

Nirvana Sugars is a Fairtrade company. It provides the best deal for small-scale sugar-cane plantation growers in Least Developed Countries. Our cane sugars, produced under strict quality standards are made from sugar-cane plantations grown in Tropical countries. These sugar estates include extensive small-scale plantation holders who receive a fair deal for their sugar cane. Our mission is to source and purchase quality produce and pay a fair price for it. That is why we adopted new minimum guaranteed prices for the production of natural cane sugars. These prices, above the normal Fairtrade minimum, reflect the additional costs to the growers for producing such quality cane sugars and ensure that they share in the added value of these products. Fairtrade guarantees a better deal for Third World producers. The terms of trade include premium prices, credit terms and a long-term trading commitment. Fairtrade also agrees terms of production that include environmental standards, health and safety regulations and decent wages. Products, which are produced in line with Fairtrade criteria, are awarded the Fairtrade Mark in the UK by the Fairtrade Foundation which is part of Fairtrade Labeling Organisation International.

How deep is Consumer Demand for Fair Trade?

The most recent data show that the sale of Fair Trade Certified products continued growing strongly last year- an expansion that as been slowed but by no means halted by the current economic recession. This both heartens Fair Trade advocates and suggests future growth in the amounts and range of products that consumers are willing to pay more for in the name of social justice. While the limits to that expansion are hard to predict, several indices-sales data, an international survey of consumer opinions, and the recent large-scale involvement of major corporate retailers- suggest the phenomenon has considerably further to go before exhausting its potential for growth. Globally, the sale of Fair Trade products grew 22% in 2008 to $4.3 billion.
