Mongozo

247

Mongozo means 'to your health' in the native language of Henrique Kabia, one of the founders of Mongozo beer. His language is that of the Chokwe people, who live scattered over Angola, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In Chokwe culture it is the women who brew beer, a tradition stretching back over two centuries. Before they started making beer they used to use palm nuts to make wine. it is one of Henrique Kabia's great-great-grandmothers who was responsible for bringing about a significant change; instead of making palm wine she began making palm beer. Over the centuries her recipe was handed down from mother to daughter. Henrique's mother brewed palm beer too, but she had no daughters. She decided to break with tradition and initiate her son onto the mysteries of brewing beer. The same recipe was in his hands when he arrived in The Netherlands as a refugee in 1933. The recipe formed the basis for a new, exotic beer line with which a whole new dimension was added to the European beer tradition. You can enjoy Mongozo beer in four different flavours - coconut, banana, palm nut and Quinua.

The co-operative

430

As a member-owned organisation, The co-operative Food’s approach to determining the ethical priorities of our business is unique amongst retailers in that it is based on a member and customer mandate. The Co-operative Food Ethical Policy is our commitment to improve our ethical and environmental performance in line with our members’ expectations, and aims to maintain our position as the UK’s leading responsible retailer. In 2007 over 100,000 of our members and customers came forward to contribute to the development of the policy. In response, this consultation – the world's largest ever poll on ethics – has been developed to reflect the issues and priorities that matter most to our members: ethical trading; animal welfare; environmental impact; food quality, diet and health; and community retailing. We have already made a number of big announcements and changes in line with members' priorities, such as ending the sale of eggs from caged hens amongst others.

Westerham Brewery

349

Established in 2004 by Robert Wicks, The Westerham Brewery Company is proud to bring brewing back to the historic town of Westerham. With a rich brewing heritage, Westerham can once again be proud of locally brewed, top quality real ales. Producing exceptional real ales for the local market, we support the initiative to reduce food miles in the supply chain. Many ‘national brands’ are transported long distances and suffer from poor storage and handling. Locally sourced, our malt and hops are chosen with skill and care to produce ales with a distinct yet traditional flavour. The local hard water, which percolates through the Lower Greensand Ridge to the south of Westerham, is excellent for brewing ales such as the IPA for which Westerham was once famous. The Westerham Brewery Company will revive many of the much-loved flavours of the old Black Eagle Brewery, which closed in 1965 following the catastrophic consolidation by the ‘Big Brewers’ in the 1950’s. We have recultured the yeast from the Black Eagle Brewery. Back in 1959, after the takeover by Taylor Walker, the Black Eagle Brewery deposited freeze dried samples of their yeasts with the National Collection of Yeast Cultures, no doubt sensing that it might be lost forever. Now, 45 years later, we have revived these yeast cultures. Combined with water from the same aquifer that served the old brewery, we hope to capture the essence of what made Westerham's ales famous. Ethical and green issues are very important to us. To that end we have embarked on the following initiatives : * Encouraging the planting of new hop varieties in a new organic hop garden at Scotney Castle * Paying a significant proportion of the sales of the Little Scotney Ales to reinvest in the hop garden at Scotney Castle * Launching one of the first Fairtrade beers on draught - William Wilberforce Freedom Ale * Tithing 10% of the profits of the William Wilberforce Freedom Ale to Stop the Traffik * Tithing 10% of the sales of Gods Wallop to a charity each Christmas * Instigating land spreading of our effluent on the land to replace trucking it away * Purchase of an LPG powered delivery van and a hybrid sales car * Reducing water usage in the brewery * Removing all plastic waste from our bottled beer products and replacing with recyclable items

How deep is Consumer Demand for Fair Trade?

The most recent data show that the sale of Fair Trade Certified products continued growing strongly last year- an expansion that as been slowed but by no means halted by the current economic recession. This both heartens Fair Trade advocates and suggests future growth in the amounts and range of products that consumers are willing to pay more for in the name of social justice. While the limits to that expansion are hard to predict, several indices-sales data, an international survey of consumer opinions, and the recent large-scale involvement of major corporate retailers- suggest the phenomenon has considerably further to go before exhausting its potential for growth. Globally, the sale of Fair Trade products grew 22% in 2008 to $4.3 billion.
